AL State Senate Bil 322 provides for a uniform application and process for becoming a Notary Public in Alabama.

The Notary Application Process

Step 1

Click Here to download "Application for Notary Public Commission" Form

Complete "Application" form and collect the required documentation

Step 2

File the Application with your local Probate Office

Pay any applicable fees and allow time for the Probate Judge to review the "Application"

Step 3

Await notification of approval from the Probate Office

It is OK to complete the required online Notary Public Training course at this time.

Step 4

Click Here to navigate to the online Notary Public Training course

Complete the Training course and print the Course Completion Certificate within 30 days of "Application"

Step 5

After approval, obtain a surety bond in the amount of $50,000

Bond can be obtained from any insurance agent and is to be made payable to the State of Alabama

Step 6

Present your Training Course Completion Certificate and Bond to your local Probate Office

Pay any applicable fees and request a Notary Public Commission

Frequently Asked Questions

I was appointed as a notary prior to September 1, 2023. Do I have to do anything because of the new law?

Not immediately. When your commission expires, you will have to comply with the requirements of the new law.

Am I required to use the sample notary acknowledgements?

No. The acknowledgements that are contained in the APJA-Ali training program are only recommended examples and are not part of the revised Notary Public Act.
